Question for Melvin

A quarter of a century ago, my frinds in Detroit
were impressed by the vote Communist campaign. They
said it was conducted in a predominantly
African-American district for a seat in the state
legislature. About 2000 people from all over Detroit
volunteered to campaign in the district. It attracted
enormous support, so much so that the Reutherite
leadership of the UAW panicked and spent thousands of
PAC dollars to defeat the Communist at a time when the
money was badly needed to defeat anti-labor candidates
in other districts. I was told that the workers in
the Ford factory had unfurled a huge VOTE COMMUNIST
banner which management was afraid to take down.
My question to Melvin is what did he say to the far
left in Detroit. The far left said that the VOTE
COMMUNIST campaign was a form of treason to the
working class. The far left said that because the
workers were mostly inside the Democratic Party was no
reason why the communists should enter the Democratic
Party and fight for the workers there. They said it
was impermissable for Communists to run as candidates
inside the Democratic Party primary because if they
won, it would build illusions about the Democratic
party which at a national level was controlled by the
capitalist class.
