Bob Gould, who should please stop using those capitals, is nonetheless
generally right about the land question in Australia. On one point he is
perhaps unintentionally misleading, and that's where he writes:
"From the date of settlement in the major colonies, the land was dished out
with the support of British banks, to major capitalists who became what is
called "squatters" "
Well, but don't forget why they were called "squatters" -- they defied the
state and moved beyond boundaries of settlement to illegally occupy land.
In that sense they didn't just get the land "dished out". Later their
status was normalized of course. Whether this matters in the current debate
depends on what Lou's driving at, which I agree is not clear from his post.
I'll wait to read more.
For now I will just tell you where you can read my own discussion of the
rise of the squatters. It's on line today for the first time, in simple
form -- remember you saw it first on Marxmail. :-)
