Back to Ruling class Jews, etc.
This is sort of those "what is a Jew" question that Jews often engage
in, to no avail.
The problem with polling Jewish-Americans (and here take note of what
Mike Friedman stated about how Jews view themselves) is that it's like
polling Norwegians about politics in Norway. OK, that's an
exaggeration. Jewish Americans are probably more concerned a lot by
Israeli politics than Norwegian Americans are about Norway or Oslo
politics.
Nevertheless...the question people should have are those that arise
from statements in major American media outlets like "...a majority of
American Jewish organizations..." We often see this and in this case
it's like saying that the view of a majority of American Norwegian
organizations somehow speaks for most Norwegian-Americans. They don't
and they can't. Most Jews in the US don't belong to *any* Jewish
organization so we can throw that one out.
Jews in the US generally support Israel. Does anyone seriously disagree
with this? In the 1970s upward of half-million Jewish-Americans would
march for Israel or Soviet Jews. Now THAT'S a poll. If Louis remembers
selling The Militant during the week of the Yom Kippur war in New York
with headlines denouncing Israel he can probably tell you some
stories. All I remember is *running a lot*...usually into the subway.
It was like selling Gramna in the streets of Miami.
That most Jews supported Bush on Iraq was probably more a function of
being American than being Jewish. Big deal. This is such a ridiculous
discussion...how did this start anyway?
