Another lightning bolt from Brother Melvin-- his conclusion-- that the
conflict was directly about the social relations of production is the
inescapable product of his analysis of the development of the US as a
whole.

Both Mark and Melvin have shown how the notion of 2 ruling classes, two
state powers, in the US is untenable and unsupported by the real content
of US history.

What's the line in the blues song ?  "Washington is a bourgeois town"?
Sure is and sure was. Before the war, a bourgeois planter's town.  After
the war, a bourgeois manufacturer's  town.  The reconciliation of the
two, after the war, in the defense of private property,  was the defeat
of Reconstruction.
