Forwarded from Anthony (reply to Mark L.)

Part 2:

Now Anthony wants to buttress his view of US history by stating that after
1812 the unity of North and South over westward expansion began to break
down. But in fact there was never that unity over Westward expansion-- or
the apparent unity was based on the relative weakness of the northern
states, and the weakness of its manufacturing/free farming economy.

Anthony says he always insisted that the unity began to breakdown after
1812. That's not exactly how I recall this- I believe Anthony cited the
widespread hostility to the tariffs on the part of northern Jacksonians as
evidence of the post 1812 unanimity over westward expansion-- claiming that
the tariff would make things more expensive for the Northern home markets.

As far back as the Northwest territories act of 1787, you can see the lack
of unanimity about the precise form any expansion should assume, you can see
the South, one cankerous eye on the future, the other on the North
maneuvering for a pre-nuptial agreement to preserve its peculiar
institution.

So contrary to Anthony's magic time line, the history of the US before and
after 1812 is the history of the emerging conflict between the North's free
soil/free labor and the South's plantation slavery.
