Oct. 25 in Salt Lake City
Around four hundred people participated in Salt Lake City's
October 25 anti-war demonstration organized by People for Peace and
Justice and the Wasatch Coalition for Peace and Justice. It was a
spirited protest, tied to the national actions in Washington, D.C. and San
Francisco co-sponsored by International ANSWER and United for Peace and
Justice calling for an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq - "bring the
troops home now!", "money for jobs, education, healthcare and human needs
- not war!" and for defense of our democratic rights - "fight back against
the PATRIOT Act!" The Salt Lake protest added a fourth issue "End the
Israeli Occupation of Palestine."
Activists gathered at the State Capitol before marching down State
Street to the Federal Building where Chris Brown of WCPJ moderated a rally
with Gina Cornia of Utahns Against Hunger, Laura Bonham of Utahns for a
Just Peace in the Holy Land and University of Utah economics professor
Hans Ehrbar speaking to the four demands. The "Radical Cheerleaders" led
anti-war chants and musician Scott Fife led protest songs.
Nancy Winitzky spoke on behalf of locked-out coal miners in
Huntington, Utah who are fighting for decent wages, safe working
conditions and United Mine Workers union representation. The Salt Lake
protest featured a call for donations and support to the largely immigrant
workers, garnering hundreds of dollars and hundreds of pounds of donated
food.
The demonstration and its political message received good local
news coverage, especially in the Mormon Church owned media: NBC affiliate
KSL Television and the Deseret Morning News daily newspaper. Local news
reports credited the demonstration with involving either "hundreds" or
"over two hundred" people.
