Reply to Tom's reply
I admit I was guessing Tom O'L. was thinking of a socialist
revolution, and I am happy that I was wrong.
But I still can't follow his line of thought.
It was certainly _not_ "one gringo more or less", because Goni
Sánchez de Losada was not _any_ gringo. He was _the ultimate_ gringo.
And the second reason why I don't agree with Tom is that he (Goni,
not Tom!) was expelled by the action of the Bolivian masses, not
through a cold conspiration within the walls of the Palace.
For many decades, both Bolivia and Argentina were ruled without the
slightest consideration to the desires and wishes of their own
populations, and all this under "democratic" cover. That is, people
were raped daily and were raped... in their own name, explaining that
"this is what our people wants"!
_This_ is over. The importance of the Bolivian October 17, 2003 (BTW:
on the same date, Ovando Candia nationalized the Gulf Oil Company in
1969) lies in the fact that _people expelled Goni_, not more. But not
less.
Again: I understand that it is very hard to imagine what does such a
"simple" thing mean to Bolivian politics. It means a whole shift in
the general political setting of the country, and such a shift
changes the minds of many more than would change that mind in a First
World country. For the first time in years, progressive, patriotic
and revolutionary ideas have a massive hearing. The intelligentsia is
shifting sides again.
Many of the intellectuals, etc., who supported Goni have now opened
up their eyes. There has been as great a shift in the balance of
power as if, say, the Green party won the American presidency. It
would be a bourgeois government, of course, and one might expect it
to be an imperialist government. But it would make an enormous
difference.
Hope I hit on the good comparison.
Best,
Néstor Miguel Gorojovsky
