ARMS DEALS VOW 'BROKEN'
By Richard Smith

TONY Blair was attacked yesterday for breaking a key election pledge
and letting illegal arms dealers off the hook if they trade abroad.

The Government vowed to clamp down on the loophole in legislation being
brought in next week.

But the new law will NOT include rules on arms deals overseas -
allowing gun-traffickers to sell to war zones abroad.

Charities and MPs accused the Government of a moral failure.

Campaigner Mick North, whose daughter was killed at Dunblane, said:
"While they try to get guns off UK streets, they are refusing to
prevent British citizens selling guns to conflict-ridden countries. The
hypocrisy is incredible."

Labour MP Barry Gardiner said: "It's a huge disappointment."

In the 2001 manifesto, Labour vowed to regulate arms dealers "wherever
they are located".

Oxfam said: "The broken promises will mean lost lives."

Other EU nations and the US already have extra-territorial controls
over arms dealers.

A DTI spokesman said: "We have worked hard to close loopholes and clamp
down on suspect deals made abroad."
