Jose Saramogo says "I have not broken with Cuba"

The Sunday edition of Juventud Rebelde is the largest circulation
issue of the week. It's read by more people than the daily papers
both because it includes longer feature articles and cultural stuff,
the weekly TV guide and so on, and has several more pages.

Granma isn't published on Sunday. As the Bush administration has
continued its occupation of Iraq, and has ratcheted up attacks on
Cuba, important voices on the political left who had criticized the
island earlier in the year have spoken up in defense of Cuba's
rights to self-determination. Noam Chomsky did this in his recent
Radio Havana Cuba interview. For those who wish to read that:

Today, the Portuguese Novelist Jose Saramogo, who had
publicly criticized Cuba last spring, declares in this exclusive new
interview with Juventud Rebelde, La Jornada and Cubadebate
that he has NOT in fact broken with the island. As he puts it:

"Yo no he roto con Cuba. Sigo siendo un amigo de Cuba, pero
me reservo el derecho de decir lo que pienso, y decirlo cuando
entienda que debo decirlo." (Roughly translated: "I haven't broken
with Cuba. I'm still a friend of Cuba, but I reserve the right to say
what I think, and to say it when I think it's best to say it."
