Was A Vote To Recall the PRI a Vote For Vicente Fox?

The worst thing about the Greens Supporting a Republican funded recall of a
Democratic Party governor only months after his election, is that it weakens
the argument that they are nothing more than spoilers that help elect
Republicans. It dramatically reduces their ability to pose as a real
alternative to anything in the 2004 elections. It is instructive to
look at the Greens conduct in Mexico to examine how a similar Green
electoral maneuver turned out.

There, like in California, the Green Party is no alternative to anything.
By opportunistically latching on to a Rightist electoral maneuver they are
now seen as part of that corruption by the wider electorate. The Greens
are going nowhere in Mexico long term, for who will pay attention to the
limp Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) at this point? They have made even
their message of respecting the environment suspect in the eyes of voters.
The PVEM was nothing more than a green suit when needed by businessmen
(Amigos of Fox). Their electorialist opportunism has netted a view that
they are really not much more than a satellite for Fox.

Ultimately, socialists supporting 'watermelons', will turn socialists
towards the PVEM style of politics; a red, thin-skinned fruit, with green
pap inside for the substance. The PVEM platform today is ....LOVE,
JUSTICE, and FREEDOM. Not exactly LAND, BREAD, and PEACE. Not
anything that is a serious program for change, in either Mexico or the US.
Why should socialists support this electorialist pablum as being an
advance? It's not.

Mexican Parties That Backed Fox Fined
Fri Oct 10
By E. EDUARDO CASTILLO, Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY - Two political parties that ushered President Vicente Fox into
office in 2000 were fined $48 million on Friday by Mexico's Federal
Electoral Institute for campaign violations. The fine was based on
evidence that Fox's National Action Party and the allied Environmentalist
Green Party accepted foreign campaign donations, exceeded campaign spending
limits and failed to report campaign income. Fox's victory ended 71 years
of one-party rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.

The electoral institute's general council approved the fine with six votes
in favor and three abstentions.
National Action is responsible for two-thirds of the fine, or $31.8 million,
with the much smaller Green Party due to pay the remaining $16.2 million.
The 3-year-old investigation by the institute is among the inquires known as
the "Friends of Fox" cases, after the name of a private group that raised
funds for the presidential campaign.
