Brief report: Hunterbear
Dear friends and well wishers,
We are deeply grateful for the almost hundred messages and inquiries from
people wishing us well. I had hoped to have more of a report long before
now. The doctors have been unable so far to diagnose this bizarre disease
in which the blood cannot adequately reproduce itself. [My bone marrow is
excellent and my iron reserves are high.] My energy waxes and wanes but I
keep going. Among many tests given were a colonoscopy which produced
nothing -- except my heart stopped twice during the procedure. Then there
were many heart tests after which my heart was held to be "strong". A very
important recent test --the "dreaded" bone marrow exam--eliminated hundreds
of disease possibilities, including all of the blood cancers. (Obviously,
that was very good news.) Yesterday I did a cat scan [no results yet]--but
that may be somewhat redundant because some organs have already been
checked.
The six members of our immediate family have been invaluable as have a
number of neighbors. In addition, so have two relatively new young people
who are on the edges of our family circle -- moving deeper! -- and
frequently stay at our house. One is Josie's special friend, Cameron --
from rural Idaho and IBEW. The other is Mimi, Thomas' special friend who
with him is also an ISU premed student, a very attractive and very nice
young woman from Zambia.
I deeply apologize for my lapses in reporting but I do hope to have
something definitive before too long. The doctors, again, are totally
baffled but continue to work. I continue to live and function as
effectively as I can on several fronts. We deeply appreciate all the
expressions of support that have come to us.

And now for radical colleagues : In the mid-1920s, William D. Haywood -- in
lonely exile in Moscow -- wrote an American friend: "These Russians are so
damn ideological. I swear that one of the days they'll come to blows."
{This after my following a couple of discussion lists.]

In our Gray Hole, the ghosts often dance in the junipers and sage, on the
game trails, in the tributary canyons with the thick red maples, and on the
high windy ridges -- and they dance from within the very essence of our own
inner being. They do this especially when the bright night moon shines down
on the clean white snow that covers the valley and its surroundings. Then
it is as bright as day -- but in an always soft and mysterious and
remembering way. [Hunterbear]
