Yeah, but you can't really go by employment. For example, the US Navel
Station in San Diego is 'only' a base (biggest navel base in the world,
but still only a base) they don't really input, even with all the
personnel stationed there, that much into the economy outside of the
low wages paid to navy personnel. Both Bay Area air force bases at
Edwards (which, I think, closed about 2 years ago) in Sonoma and Travis
in Solano county account for the same thing. TRW, Boeing, these design
groups, now THAT'S big bucks...really big. Plus lots and lots of money
goes to the universities such as UC at Livermore...where half of all
atomic research is done by the DoD and Stanford.
