Fair Taxes and Free Elections

Update on the Camejo Campaign
October 4, 2003

Highlight of the Coming Week

Election Day - Get Out the Vote - Tell Your Friends
Vote Green - Vote Camejo

Camejo Continues Debate Dominance
In LA Camejo Emphasizes environment, corporate
responsibility, civil liberties and fair taxes

Peter Camejo - who has appeared in every gubernatorial
debate - a major breakthrough for Green candidates -
continues to dominate the debates. In the Sacramento
debate, the only where Arnold Schwartzenegger
appeared, Peter had the largest audience ever for a
Green candidate. The LA Times poll found that
Democrats ranked Peter first in the debate with 25%
saying he "won" to 17% for McClintock and only 12% for
Bustamante. A SF Gate web-poll found that 32 percent
thought Peter won the debate.

In Los Angeles, Peter again dominated. He continued to
highlight his fair tax plan and also emphasized the
urgent need for environmental protection, renewable
energy, civil liberties and corporate responsibity.
Peter has also been a consistent advocate, throughout
the debates, for election reform that would allow
run-off voting so people could vote their beliefs and
not their fears.

Camejo In It To The End
If You Want To Send A Message for Fair Taxes, Free
Election and Social Justice Vote Camejo

In the final days of the campaign, Peter made it clear
whenever he was asked that he was in the election till
the end. Peter acknowledged that he understood why
some would vote Democrat because of fear of Republican
rule "I'm not angry at them, because I understand the
trap they're in," he said, adding "voters once again
are being forced into a lesser-of-two-evils vote
because of the Democrat-Republican stranglehold on
electoral politics." Until our electoral system is
changed to allow run-off voting people will too often
be forced to vote based on their fears and not on
their beliefs.

However, Peter also made the point that only the Green
Party stands on principles of social and economic
justice. "It was the Democrats who voted support for
President Bush when he attacked and occupied Iraq, the
Democrats who voted for the Patriot Act without
reading it and Governor Davis who took special
interest money in return for political favors. Because
of this the only way to send a clear message opposing
the direction our country is going is to vote Green."

Camejo Stands Up for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties

On October 1 Peter spoke to the issues of civil rights
and civil liberties when he participated in a forum
organized by the California Civil Rights Alliance.
Peter noted that the Green Party was the only
political party to oppose the Patriot Act - which
undermines the US and California Bill of Rights. He
also said "The Green Party will not back away from our
friends in the Muslim and Arab communities. We will
not bow to prejudice. We will stand by people under
unfairly under attack in ways that violate basic human
rights."

Peter said as governor he would not only use the
office as a bully pulpit to speak out against federal
encroachments on civil rights -- secret searches and
wiretaps, military tribunals, racial profiling and and
other violations of basic human rights -- but would
use state resources to protect local mosques and
Islamic centers, and to prevent state and local law
enforcement from investigating people on the basis of
race, religion or political beliefs.

Grass Roots Keeps Camejo in Final Two Debates
Tens of Thousands of Letters Sent to Debate Sponsors

In an overwhelming show of support people visiting the
votecamejo.org sent thousands of letters to debate
co-sponsors. Eight thousand letters were sent to
national, state and local League of Women Voters
offices and twelve thousand letters were sent to media
and other debate co-sponsors.

In addition, newspapers editorialized in favor of
including Peter and Michael Moore urged visitors to
his website to help keep Peter in the final two
debates. As the SF Examiner said:

"But the decision on Camejo shouldn't be based on poll
numbers alone. It ought to be based on ideas. In a
recent debate -- the only one Arnold Schwarzenegger
has deigned to attend -- Camejo was one of only two
candidates, along with McClintock, who was able to
articulate concrete ideas about how to solve the
state's challenges."

And concluded:

"The League of Women Voters has a long and honorable
history of providing good information to voters and
encouraging quality debate on the issues. It ought to
follow in this distinguished pattern and bring Peter
Camejo back to the table."

The sponsors listened and, somewhat remarkably, did a
public about-face and invited Peter to the final two
debates. Thank you for your help in making this
happen!

Camejo Returns to Berkeley

On October 3, Peter returned to the UC Berkeley campus
where he had been expelled for his anti-Vietnam War
protests. He came to speak to students about how
tuition tax hikes are really a transfer of wealth to
the wealthiest three percent of Californians, those
who have 75 percent of the income but pay the lowest
tax rates - lower than the middle class and the
poorest in California.
