This email message just received by me from Arabic translator wizard
Muhammad Abu Nasr will, I'm sure, be of interest -- both the translated
document itself and his own commentaries.

Dear Jay,
How are things?
Thank you, thank you, thank you very much for this
URL!!! The Arabic daily al-Quds al-Arabi barely
mentioned this important statement, but I followed
your URL, then found the story in Islamonline's Arabic
section and there they had a link to the full text of
the document.
So below is my translation.
Note among other things that the message extends an
offer to negotiate on a US withdrawal. Not that the
US would negotiate any time soon with the resistance,
but the offer is significant. It means the US is NOT
"stuck" in the situation; they are there willingly and
intentionally.
According to my information from that part of the
world, the media, including al-Jazeera and al-Arabiyya
TV are censoring the news extensively on behalf of the
Americans. The other day a video was played showing a
guerrilla group preparing to launch an attack on the
Americans and then it skipped to scenes of them
congratulating themselves afterwards on the success of
their attack. Although the video included scenes of
the actual attack, the "Arab" TV company refused to
show that part for fear of angering the Americans too
much. It was also stated that such videos are being
made on a virtually daily basis but that the Arab TVs
(and obviously the American ones too) are totally
blocking them out.
If Viet Nam was a TV war, this is the most
blacked-out-from-TV war in history.
Back on the Statement you alerted me to, it is vitally
important and interesting too because the Islamicist
websites published just a few days ago a statement
that their forces in Iraq have formed a unified
command called the "Army of the Partisans of the
Sunnah." (The Sunnah being the tradition of the
Prophet Muhammad.)
Thus we now have two country-wide unified resistance
commands in Iraq, this National Liberation Front of
Iraq (and this message is essentially Baathi in
character) and the Islamist Army of the Partisans of
the Sunnah.
Although the Islamist message was expressly pro-Sunni
and expressly anti-secular and insisted on the need to
follow up the expulsion of the occupiers with the
establishment of a government by Shari'ah (Islamic
law) (and all that part of their statement was clearly
a swipe at the Baath Party) it is not impossible that
the two resistance commands might work in tandem, just
as secular patriotic and Islamist resistance groups
have done in Palestine and Lebanon. The two unified
commands were set up apparently separately and
announced within days of each other and that is
probably significant.
Best!
Muhammad

Declaration
In the name of God, the Merciful, the Mercy-giving.
"And fight in the way of God against those you fight
against you, but do not commit aggression, for God
does not love aggressors." [al-Qur'an, 2:190]
Great Iraqi people!
Men who believe in their Lord in truth have banded
together for jihad and declared the establishment of
their Front, the National Front for the Liberation of
Iraq. This front, that embraces detachments of the
heroic resistance fighting under the banner of Allahu
Akbar ["God is Greatest", the motto inscribed by
Saddam Hussein on the Iraqi national flag], will be
the source of your glory and your pride in the truth
and depth of faith in the dear homeland, and high
confidence in the noble, proud, and courageous people.
This Front, by the grace of God, will truly express
all your greatest hopes, your aims, and your
aspiration for progress and advance, and for your
right to a free and honorable life.
Sons and daughters of our proud people! The children
of the homeland have a duty towards it, a sacred duty,
which is to defend it and to sacrifice everything,
however precious and dear, for the sake of its might,
honor, and high standing. Therefore we have taken the
oath at which the very mountains shake, we have sworn
that we will come to a reckoning with the occupier,
and what a reckoning! Recent days have shown and
coming days will also show, by the grace of God, how
true our resolve and our determination are and how
capable we are of confronting the enemy. Our
detachments have inflicted enormous losses on him in
men and materiel and the resistance will grow more
ferocious as that becomes necessary, taking forms that
he does not expect or imagine, forms that do not even
occur to him. Here on the pure land of Iraq, the land
of prophets and saints, by the grace and power of God
and by means of the determination of your devoted sons
and daughters will come the end of American-British
arrogance and tyranny. The world will witness the
most awesome epics of heroism that can be written by
the actions of a people who have sworn to achieve an
honorable life. Yet none of this prevents us from
initiating with the enemy non-violent means, with all
the potential they are likely to have, so long as the
dialogue guarantees our people's right to the
evacuation of the occupation forces from our country.
Great people! We must mention here that there will be
a harsh and difficult, yet just, reckoning with all
those who have betrayed or forsaken this homeland and
instigated the foreigner to attack it using feeble and
base excuses that only prove that they are cowards and
lackeys. Those who cheaply sold their souls and
themselves to the occupier will remain an example,
cursed by history for all ages to come.
As regards those countries that have sent or that
intend to send their forces to do what is called
"taking part in peace keeping in Iraq," the National
Front for the Liberation of Iraq warns all countries
in the world without exception, beginning with the
fraternal Arab countries and the Islamic countries,
and then all the foreign countries, against sending so
much as one soldier on any pretext. The Front will
deal with them as it deals with any of the occupation
troops.
Proud people!
You can rest assured that Baghdad has not fallen, that
it never did and never will fall. It will remain the
"Abode of Peace" for all time. It has been subjected
to a barbarous attack lead by the new Tatars. They
have brought so much pain and cruelty that it will
continue to shock humanity with their shameful and
ignominious nature. But Baghdad will remain
beautiful, magnificent, mighty, and proud; in no way
discouraging the ardor of its sons and daughters or of
the honorable people of the world.
Long live Iraq, an everlasting monument to Arab
civilization; and eternal glory to our virtuous
martyrs!
The National Front for the Liberation of Iraq.
