How to win

Felipe Pérez Roque said to the U.N. General Assembly yesterday:

"Cuba considers [...] that we should not and cannot relinquish
multilateralism; that we should not and cannot relinquish the United
Nations; that we cannot and should not relinquish the struggle for a world
of peace, justice, equality and development for all.

Cuba says that "we" (not only the Cubans, but the rest of the world as well)
should pursue these three objectives:

"First and foremost, the end of the occupation in Iraq, the immediate
handover of the real control to the United Nations and the commencement of
the recovery process for Iraq?s sovereignty and the establishment of a
legitimate government, resulting from the decision of the Iraqi people. The
scandalous distribution of Iraq?s wealth must cease immediately.

[...]

"Secondly, without further delay we must face a real reform and, above all,
a profound process of democratization of the United Nations.

[...]

"Finally, we need to return to the discussion of the serious economic and
social problems currently affecting the world. We have to turn into a
priority the battle for the right to development for nearly 5 billion
people."

My personal comment on Pérez Roque's speech:

Pérez Roque makes an impeccable argument in favor of these three objectives
in terms, not only of what is good for the poor world, but also good for the
rich world and the United States in particular. These are not "radical"
objectives. They are simply radical (with no quotes):

(1) End of occupation, handover of "real control" to the U.N., and wealth
redistribution in Iraq;
(2) "real reform" and "democratization" of the United Nations; and
(3) economic development of the poor world.

IMO, other "radical" demands piled up or juxtaposed to these three (e.g., to
hell with the U.N.) are not going to help. For what I observe, a broad
range of people in the U.S. share similar concerns as the Cubans'. The
absolute majority of the U.S. people will understand these goals and adopt
them if they are exposed to them. With more perspective on the 9/11
terrorist attacks, the U.S. people are especially sensitive now to arguments
that make sense -- particularly in the face of a senseless quagmire created
by the Bush administration in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The only sensible security strategy of the U.S. in our times of growing
interdependence is not only compatible with, but unthinkable without
achieving the objectives that the Cubans have outlined. As the richer
country in the world, the U.S. could and should play a leading role in this
process to ensure the development of the poor world, and the strengthening
and democratization of the U.N., the promotion of real international
cooperation. It is in our interest to do it and soon. As they say in
Mexico, "he who first baths has the longest time to get dry."

Of course, the first step is the immediate end of the occupation of Iraq and
the transfer of control to the U.N., which in turn should ensure that the
Iraqis restore their national sovereignty and reorganize their economy on a
fair basis.

While the U.S. people are also immediately concerned with jobs, sensible
economic growth, the need to revive moribund public services at the
national, state, and local levels, etc. it is vitally in their interest to
join the Cubans and every human being of good will in this struggle.

We need to defeat the neocon mythology -- i.e., the shameless
rationalization of sinister special interests and the surest path to U.S.'
historical ruin and human disaster. IMO, the principles the Cubans have
outlined articulate the axes of today's struggle for the minds and hearts of
the U.S. people.

Or that is my opinion anyway.
