Camejo's last words in last night's debate
Well, I'm afraid I'll have to play my usual role as critic. Camejo DID do a
fine job last night, it was probably his best performance so far, despite
(or maybe because of) the semi-Jerry Springer-type format of the debate.
When it came to discussing economic issues, however, Huffington was the only
one to relate California's problems to national problems (and got major
applause for doing so); Camejo didn't touch that subject at all. And when it
came to his summary, here was his brief mention of foreign policy:
Here we were for 10 years supporting Saddam Hussein and
arming him, and now we're illegally occupying that country
and destroying the federal budget.
What a strange formulation for prepared remarks (his summary). He seems to
have forgotten THE INVASION and THE WAR. Note that even this remark, which
in my opinion is weak, was one of the few remarks of the night (from any
candidate) to receive applause from the audience. I continue to believe that
Camejo would be much further ahead of where he is if he would make the war,
which is clearly related to American and Californian economic problems, a
central focus of his campaign.
Again, it was Huffington who was the only one who mentioned Bush's role in
California's problems (four times), and the only one who said that one key
role of the Governor of California is to fight the Bush administration:
I want to return to something very important because the people of
California
need somebody who is going to fight the Bush administration for that,
because
you know what? Let me just tell you the facts, let me tell you the facts.
The
repeal of the estate tax alone is costing us over $3 billion.
This is also the kind of thing Camejo should be saying, but isn't.
California is not going to solve its problems without a solution to problems
at a national level. And if Camejo and the Green Party aren't willing to
take on the Bush administration like Huffington is, that just plays into the
"anyone but Bush, let's vote for a Democrat" game in the next election.
