Notes on Islam
As we journey from the 20th Century into the 21st, religious
fundamentalists have been our constant companions: the political extremists
among them attacking abortion clinics in America, building quasi-military
settlements in Palestine, roaming the Afghan plateaus and haunting downtown
Manhattan. Whatever we think of them, we should understand them, yet
clearly we don?t...

Everyone knows Marx called religion the "opium of the people". Some
Marxists also know that in his day opium was seen not so much as a vehicle
of pleasant illusions but as a way to relieve suffering. I suspect few have
really thought about the whole passage below. Here it is (slightly
