Re: Chávez vs. Hussein, part two
Just a word of certainly NOT moderation, wouldn't want to be caught dead
being a moderating influence, but a word of caution:
We went through this discussion just prior to and during the US invasion
with HCKL and it got to the point of Mr. Liu hoping for the US left to drown
in buckets of blood; this after the discussion got "hijacked" in a way to
the support Saddam=self-determination=anti-imperialism; opposition to the
war that does not support Saddam=neo-colonialism.
That was a false representation then and it is now and we should be involved
in Marxist analyses, not repetition compulsions.
The stakes are much greater than simple notions of self determination and
imperialism. But... regarding this matter, since we seem to like
repetition, let me recommunicate something I posted 8 months ago:
Suppose Savimbi had been victorious in Angola, something that wasn't that
far from realization until Cuba, in one of the noblest moments of the 2nd
half of this century, sent its divisions to defeat the apartheid army of the
Union of South Africa.
Then 2-3 years down the road, despite his imperial backing, Savimbi,
strictly for reasons of personal greed, decides to abrogate the agreements
with imperialism re oil and diamonds, and the USofA and the UofSA decide to
back an invasion, this time under the guise of democracy, to topple Savimbi
and restore the "natural order" of things.
We know what would, what must happen. Tremendous demonstrations of
unmatched fury in both USof A and UofSA against the proxy invasion. We know
what must happen in Angola, mobilization of all Marxist forces to take the
field in battle against the invasion.
Given the conditions in Angola, it is likely that such a Marxist
mobilization would be difficult as Savimbi would have spent the 2-3 years
hunting down the Marxists. It is also likely that such a mobilization could
have been accomplished organizationally in separate militias, and that would
have been a great thing.
Nevertheless the mobilization must occur. And that does not entail, require
any support for Savimbi.

Now, surprise of surprises, when I posted this originally, I received an
offlist communication from Mark Jones, who didn't exactly hold me close as a
dear comrade, saying that he could agree with everything I stated in that
post. Which goes to show you, human beings will always confound your
fondest stereotypes.
