RE: Laura's departure
Adam,
Sorry to read you're nauseated.
All of us who teach in North America have had born again Christian
students who complain that their education shouldn't require them to
encounter things that upset them. They seem to think of education as
something other than having to encounter and confront what you don't
know--some of which will surely disturb one's comfort and self-esteem.
The list exists, in part, for educational purposes. There seems to be a
sense that when members of the Revolutionary Vegetarian League join us,
veterans of many years in the RVL should not to discuss that experience
in deference to the comfort of current RVL members and supporters who
just plain don't want to hear or have to think about criticisms.
In this particular case, nobody refused to deal with the SWP as part of
the socialist movement. Nobody expelled or excluded Laura. Nobody
advocated doing this. (nice strawmen though they are) Quite the
contrary. Laura chose to drop rather than have to read things that
upset her, which is her choice.
Best,
Mark L.
PS: This said, I would suggest that we all recognize the futility of
trying to persuade anyone by email of what their daily experience has
not been able to do.
