The power of the US media
Those who read my blog Left I on the News (http://lefti.blogspot.com) know
one of my major peeves these days is the continued emphasis on the number of
US (rather than US/UK not to mention Iraqi) soldiers killed (rather than
killed and injured) in Iraq by hostile action (rather than by all causes)
since May 1 (rather than since the start of the invasion). Just speaking
about deaths and not injuries, the relative numbers are now 62 (US soldiers
killed since May 1 by definitely identifiable hostile action) vs. 310 total,
FIVE TIMES AS MANY and a number which would clearly have a larger impact on
the American psyche.
Just to illustrate the power of American mass media, however, today I found
the same 62 number in Granma online
(http://www.granma.cu/ingles/2003/agosto03/mar12/32aznar-i.html). Truly a
scary illustration of how even the most progressive sources can be
influenced.
