RE: Correction: Goethe, not Hegel

The different versions of the quote are all OK, it depends on how you
translate it. It's from Goethe's Faust (the Studierzimmer scene - in
Faust's study). I've lent my copy but from memory it is this:

"Denn grau is alle Theorie
Doch gruen des Lebens golden-goldner Baum."

It's possible Hegel used it, but in any case Marx often quoted Faust.

Tony Cliff quoted it as:
"Theory my friend is grey
But green is the eternal tree of life"

So if you meet someone from the IST, you are bound to get that version. :-)
