RE: Correction: Goethe, not Hegel
I think it was actually "Theory is grey, my friend, but the tree of life is
evergreen." Pretty much the same thing.
I did a search and also found it quoted as ""All theory, dear friend, is
grey, but the golden tree of actual life springs every green."

Subject: Correction: Goethe, not Hegel
In a previous post to Julio, I falsely attributed Goethe's saying 'Grey
is
all theory, but green alone the
tree of life' to GWF Hegel (1770-1831), who said "Minerva's owl flies at
dusk", but in reality it was JW Goethe (1749-1832) who talked about the
green tree of life.
It is of course possible, that Hegel did use Goethe's phrase, but I
cannot
find a locus for this immediately. Interestingly, Goethe lived a lot
longer
than Hegel.

Jurriaan
