"Sequestering" Resources-- the South and the North
The US Census Data for 1850 recorded the total number of farms per state,
the number of acres of improved lands in farms per state, number of acres of
unimproved lands in farms, and the value of farm implements and machinery
per state. Calculating certain ratios, improved acres/total acres;
machinery value/total acre provide a snapshot of the backwardness of the
South and the progress of the North:
