A debate between Ken Lawrence and Martin Glaberman ran
in Urgent Tasks over the question of whether slaves were
"proletarians."

I tend to come down on Lawrence's side that they indeed
were, although my study of Capital is probably not adequate
according to Julio Huato's standards (even though my study
of it was at Glaberman's knee).

If anybody's interested enough, I might transcribe it by hand
and post it (no scanner here).

In any case, the birth of capitalism was not immediately accompanied
by a generalized system of wage slavery. I find it rather curious
that some would argue that capitalism in its declining phase
must also be characterized by generalized wage slavery.
