Re: Prostitution in Cuba (To Walter L.)
To augment David's comment, I might add that if we desire the revolution
to continue in Cuba, we must fight for it where we are, as Che said (I
think quoting Martí) "in the belly of the beast."
I know a guy who writes to politicians and demands they drop the
blockade.
The Democrats write back. They agree that ending the embargo is
desirable --but to make deposing the evil dictator more feasible!
However, writing to the editors of small town newspapers can get your
analysis in print. (Don't bother with the New York Times. I knew a
marxian professor at Brooklyn College who had a filing cabinet drawer
full of unpublished letters to "The Paper of Record.") Avoid
shibboleths of comradism--and deal with the issue in the plainest
terms. Remember your purpose is to convince, not to win or show off
your Red chops.
Current: Keep your attention trained on the Pastors For Peace Caravan of
Solidarity with Cuban People. I cannot say I agree with the religious
foundation for this effort, but it certainly has utility in the
struggle. They have run into harrassment before; the US state
interference in their bourgeois "rights" further underscores the
hypocrisies inherent in the system--if we bother to bring it up.
Ultimately, the approximation of socialism exemplified by the Cuban
Revolution is a threat to the greed, injustice and violence in the
capitalist system. "They" know it. We have to show it.
