Odd footnote to Art & Politics
Glancing through my younger son's lectures notes for his Art in Asia unit I
was struck by a footnote on Art in Indonesia. After the bloody 1966
military coup, it seems that the Suharto Govt began to sponsor a particular
form of art. Guess which?
Why our old friend Abstract Expressionism of course.
I was astonished to learn this. What role I wonder did the CIA play in
this choice of art? Who dictated this re-run of the Schlesinger-Greenberg
move in America in the 1940s?
Now there's a worthy PhD topic.
