France faces strike paralysis

A 24-hour national strike - dubbed Black Tuesday - is taking place in
France, in what is seen as the biggest challenge yet to the centre-right
government of Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

People using public transport face severe disruption - with 80% of
international and domestic flights cancelled at French airports and vastly
reduced train, metro and bus services.

Schools, hospitals and post offices will also be affected, as will public
utilities such as gas and electricity.

The strike has been called by France's main trade unions as part of a
protest against reforms to the state pension system which would force people
to work longer.
