US disastrous policies led to first political crisis
of the occupation forces in Iraq since the end of the

BAGHDAD, IRAQ - Militarily defeating Iraq proved
easier than occupying it. High ranking US officials in
charge of running Baghdad and Iraq are returning home,
after being forced to quit, in what a leading U.S.
newspaper said was part of a broad shake-up of U.S.
postwar operations in Iraq. A U.S. official confirmed
the news on Sunday.
The shake-up is a sudden turn of US policies in
occupied Iraq facing the disastrous first month of
occupying it.
Marked by growing opposition from Iraqi people and the
incompetence of US administrators who failed to
restore vital services while striking deals with
former Baath Party's high ranking officials, seemed to
anger collaborators and foes.
Barbara Bodine, the U.S. coordinator for central Iraq
and the effective mayor of Baghdad, will leave Iraq
"in the next couple of days" to take a senior post at
the State Department, an official at the Office of
Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (OHRA) told
Reuters in Baghdad.
The Washington Post said Bodine would return to
Washington as part of a broad shake-up of U.S.
operations in Iraq amid criticism over the failure to
quickly establish an interim government and restore
public services there.
Retired U.S. General Jay Garner, who has overseen
rebuilding efforts in Iraq over the last three weeks,
will also be departing with some of his top aides,
possibly within a week or two, the Post reported,
quoting U.S. officials.
The Post also reported that the U.S. military unit
directing the search for weapons of mass destruction
in Iraq is dismantling its operations and will likely
leave Iraq in June[...]
