Emmanuel "Matt" McClarnon: Fallen Comrade of the IRSM
Fallen Comrade of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement
Emmanuel "Matt" McClarnon
Volunteer - Irish National Liberation Army
Killed in Action on 12 May 1981
Aged 20, he was shot by a British Army sniper from an observation
post in the Divis Flats, West Belfast. On active service at the time
of his death, he had fired on soldiers just minutes after it was
announced that a member of the Provisional IRA, Francis Hughes, had
died on hunger strike.
He died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. The ambulance
had been held up at a British Army checkpoint, even though the
soldiers knew there was a severely injured man inside.
At his funeral, six INLA volunteers stepped from the doorway of St.
Peter's Catholic Church and fired three volleys of shots in the air.
All along the route to Milltown Cemetery, crowds gathered to pay
their last respects.
He died as he lived: a Republican Socialist. Remember him with
honour and pride.
