About two or more years ago, Les Schaffer, Louis and I kicked around some
ideas about getting primary research, data and sources from Indian Country.
I noted to Les the following:
Much of the research on Indian issues involves cherrypicking-cut-and-paste
syntheses from historical records and/or
secondary and tertiary sources
Les responded:
have you given any thought to starting a web site which would exist
specifically to chronicle this stuff as you find it?
best

Yes, that is a great idea. I have a whole lot of such documents--more and
more come in every day or I get them in Indian Country. I don't have the
technical skills and could use some advice and help. I also have audio
recordings and some films of various aspects of genocide going on in Indian
Country.
right. this would make a nice collection for a web site.
Louis was with me in Blackfoot Country (we slept in the same Tipi with my
daughter Christina--the little Blackfoot activist 7 years-old)
right on Christina!!!!
and Louis suggested something along the same lines. He said he could give
some technical help and if you could help also it would be appreciated). I
need to learn so much more about the technical side of internet, it just
there is so little time and therefore we need help.
i'd be glad to kick in some time and advice. [deleted] is also needing help
with setting up a web site and i have been emailing them some
recommendations.

Well here we go. From Dark Night Field Notes, we are setting up a chatline
for Rez-based/connected Indians and some selected non-Indians to share
primary data, scandals, intelligence, common struggles, legal citations and
research,
tactics, strategies, connections, checking on bona fides of various
activists or purported activists, etc. I have been asked to moderate this
group (now it is payback time for all the shit I have given the moderators
of various lists on which I have been). Any technical help from the folks on
this list is appreciated as my own computer skills are extremely limited
(sorry). My job will also be to make sure that certain information that
should be deep and dark for security reasons does not accidently slip out.
Thanks so much to all,
Jim
Jim (and others who want to try this),
The dark night chat room is up and running. The following are instructions
on how to access it. When you are set up, lets run a test to make sure you
are connected properly. Either email me or call me to let me know you are
connected. So far, I am the only participant in the chat room (my nickname
is rat1960). If you are not familiar with chat rooms, it may take time to
get acclimated. Once we work out any issues with downloading and using this
Jim, you can send the instructions out to whoever you want to include on the
discussion.
Based on a previous conference call discussion, this chat room is intended
to be kind of an intertribal chat room with Jim as the moderator. Hopefully,
based on some of these discussions, with the agreement of the participants,
in the future we can develop an indigenous issues worldwide map on the Dark
Night website where up to date information can be accessed by clicking on a
state, country or region.
A step by step installation process follows:
Please print these instructions before following!
1. An IRC channel (chat room) has been created on nevernet. To use it
you'll need an IRC client. mIRC is a good client which can be found at
http://www.mirc.com
Click on this link.
- Once you get to the mIRC home page, you need to download the IRC Client.
Go to 'Download mIRC' and follow the instructions to download to your
computer.
- If this is done correctly, you will end up with an mIRC icon on your
computer.
2. Click on the mIRC icon. An 'About IRC' popup box will appear. Close out
of this (use the X in the upper right of the popup box).
- Next, an 'mIRC Options' popup box will appear. Fill out the full name (you
don't have to use your real name), email address and nickname portions and
click OK.
- Next, you should see the 'Status' popup box. At the bottom of this box is
a blinking cursor (or carat if you prefer). Type in: /server
kewlio.nevernet.net and then click on the Enter key.
- Next, an 'mIRC Channels' popup box will appear. At the top, type in:
#darknightpress and click on the join button.
3. You can now participate in the discussion.
- To learn more about functions and utilization of the chat room, go to HELP
and then CONTENTS on the mIRC screen.
