Although the obvious point has just struck me that he is probably in with
the U.S., or otherwise how could he get an armed group up the road and
through the checkpoints from Najaf to Baghdad?  If that reasoning holds up,
then he may be an associate of the U.S. collaborator al-Khoei who was killed
in Najaf a couple days ago.  There are reports that the people who killed
al-Khoei are in control of Najaf, so it might be that al-Zubaidi is hiding
out, regrouping, or something.

Or of course my speculations may be completely wrong.
