Henry, given the US' left pitiful status, we could be out in the
streets saying "our lives for you, Saddam" and it wouldn't have made a
damn bit of difference.
I mean, here you have a situation where a monstrous superpower, with
billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of troops, and military
technology out the wazoo is going to war against a country that hasn't
been able to even feed its population, get its water plants working, or
even fix the damn roads after fifteen years of sanctions. And you think
that the US Left--which numbers, at most, a few thousand
individuals--is responsible for its defeat because it didn't call for
uncritical, undying support for Hussein? That doesn't make the least
bit of sense to me. Hell, I *wish* we were so powerful that wars would
be won or lost depending on what we said.
Incidentally, I think post-mortems on the anti-war movement are waaaay
premature. First, let's be clear--this anti-war movement is really a
continuation (and massive growth) of the movement against the
Afghanistan war. Second, Bush has openly set his sites on Iran and
Syria next (which, in my opinion, is the same as declaring war on the
entire Arab world as well as Central Asia). So even if the US has Iraq
completely under its thumb--and I don't think it does--the war is not
over. This is the merely second stage in Washington's War on the World.
And as the war continues, so does the anti-war movement. I don't think
we've even hit the eye of the storm yet.
