Yeah, but the best thing we in the US can do to stop
imperialism is build a sustained anti-war movement
that will have a bigger and bigger effect on how
ordinary people (and the governemnt) think and act as
the war drive continues through the next months and
years. With this goal in mind (reaching more and more
american people to build the biggest possible antiwar
sentiment) the words the professor used were
tactically hurtful (at least from all the information
I've so far seen about his speech, even in context).
I agree with the crux of his message, and I defend his
right to say what he said (and we should of course
defend him from the media slanders and attacks), but
there are other ways to relate to people and still get
out the same message, ways that will bring people in
rather than repel them.
That being said, I don't at all wish for him to be
excluded from the movement, though I disagree with his
choice of words in a tactical sense. And again, I
probably don't have the best sense of the whole
context of the speech. Still, calling for a million
Mogidashus, even in a certain context, is going to be
interpreted by ordinairy people as calling for
millions of deaths of Americans. Not the wisest choice
of words.
I live 20 blocks from Colombia. I wish I would've
known it was going on so I could have see it for
myself.
