Re: the youth thing

Before the war started, MTV reported that 81% of the
youth it polled were against the war (without the UN).
I personally haven't met one young person who supports
the war, and I've had countless discussions with
random youth. And, from what my unpoliticized 14 year
old sister tells me (who attends a NYC public school
with mostly students of color), everyone in her school
is anti-war, a few withstanding. Her and her friends
who never had anything to do with politics before are
now attending rallies and walkouts, and arguing with
adults about you don't liberate people by dropping
bombs on them.

It seems to me the big dividing line between pro/anti
war is more geographic. The strategic cities of the US
(New York, LA, DC, etc) seem to have people with a
more critical edge, maybe because city life,
especially for poor folks of color, necessitates this.
Also, cities are concentrated with more intellectual
types. Diversity and different ideas float around in
urban environments, making a much less passive
environment.

Suburbs and rural areas, on the contrary, are more
prone to contain the mindless, flag-waving shock
troops for the Bush administration, who swallow all
the govt propaganda without any resistance-- at least
from my experience (though there are certain
exceptions-- some suburbs, like Duluth, MN (where I
lived for a few months) are highly progressive).
