AP. 30 March 2003. Police move in as anti-war march by some 200,000
Moroccans degenerates.
RABAT -- Riot police moved in to end an anti-war march Sunday by some
200,000 Moroccans as frenzied demonstrators began throwing stones and
burning U.S. flags and tearing down posters advertising American
products.
About a dozen people were injured by stones and bottles, hospital
sources said.
Brandishing fake weapons, coffins and portraits of Iraqi leader Saddam
Hussein, demonstrators marched through the capital of this Muslim North
African kingdom denouncing the "imperialist aggression."
Protesters carried coffins said to represent "Arab martyrs," and waved
posters referring to U.S. President George W. Bush as a "vampire of
Arab blood."
More than 1,000 police in full riot gear surveyed the march, among the
largest in recent years in this normally tranquil city and the first
here in a decade to grow violent.
Police moved in as some protesters began hurling stones near the train
station and the royal palace, injuring about a dozen people.
Others, throwing bottles and stones, tried to attack a McDonald's fast
food restaurant but were stopped by some 100 police.
Protesters managed to tear down and burn posters advertising McDonalds
and other U.S. products.
At least a dozen U.S. and Israeli flags were burned.
