Re: The Longest Supply Lines

"Will the Battle of Baghdad force the US to abandon its bid for the
control of the Mid East and eventually, the rest of the world ?"

The US will see the war all the way to its conclusion, damn the
consequences. The militaristic warnings to Tehran and Damascus show that
America is not in the least interested in diplomacy, negotiation, or
anything other than brute force and conquest in the region. Bush the
messiah is not the kind of man who wavers in conviction.

The goal here is said to be to remake the Arab world in the democratic
image of America. Whereas this America is actually only made possible by
suppressing the freedom of social, political, and economic development
of the entire Third World, it is clear that the administration and its
leading lights of thought have swallowed their own propaganda about
their virtuousness.

Anyone who interferes in this civilizing mission, be it surrounding
countries or the people of Iraq, will be attacked and swept aside as
enemies of freedom. Imperialism has entered a stage of severe neurosis
whereby it feels the need to confirm its purity and nobleness by
silencing and stamping out evidence to the contrary, which in this case
is not at all scarce.

It is already clear in abundance that the rhetoric of the Pentagon and
White House increasingly echoes that of Israel, in many ways: erecting
the straw-man "terrorist" or "regime death-squad" categories which all
Iraqi nationalists fall under, emphasizing the moral superiority of the
invading force in battlefield tactics, trumpeting the canard of
humanitarian concern for civilians. If the war continues to deviate from
plan, it will only be a matter of time now before the Americans get
Israel actively involved in the war effort itself. For soon enough,
there won't be any more sops to the Arab street to maintain the
stability of Arab dictators because these dictators will be dead, or
will align themselves with the masses to avoid attending the funeral
arrangements being made for them by the US hawks.

These are times when anything is possible and the most dangerous of that
which is possible is likely.
