Things change
From: "Kenneth Campbell" <kkc@xxxxxxxxxxxx>
Key to the city?? Oh, I love it. What a Simpsons moment that would
make... someone write Matt Groening about this for the next season.
"This is Kent Brockman, live at City Hall, where Mayor Quimby is
embracing Springfield's Favorite Fascist, Saddam Hussein!"
^^^^^^^^^
CB: Yea. Or George Bush could be their favorite war criminal or something .
^^^^^
>There is a large Iraqi population in Detroit.
Ain't they nice people? The first Iraqi person I met (person who upfront
stated she was Iraqi and didn't give a shit about what the news media
was saying about her kin) was in university. clip
^^^^^^^
CB: Uhuh, actually, when I was younger the church I went to had a lot of
Chaldean members. Of course that was a long time before all the American
anti-Iraqi stuff.
^^^^^^
Again, these kinds of anecdotal stories are only possible because
capitalism encourages world intercourse. (Both kinds!) Capitalists
invite in labor from other countries because they either make cheaper
labor (old style immigration policy, meaning the Irish and Italians et
al.) or they replace the educated labor western governments don't want
to support through social programs. (Why educate a citizen to become an
engineer when this guy from India will gladly come here and give us the
skills without infrastructure investment?)
^^^^^^^^
CB: Yes , the U.S. is a real vampire. The old ripoff of natural resources
from colonies is supplemented by ripoff of cultural resources now. I wish I
didn't know all this stuff so I didn't have to dislike my country so much. It
gets warying.
^^^^^^^
This world intercourse is a part of rational capitalist government, but,
also, unstable and creates endless opportunities for crisis. (Such as we
have right now.)
^^^^^^^
CB: Yes, and they are constantly revolutionizing the instruments of
production on top of that. All that is solid melts . It's enough to make your
head spin.
>7 Mile Road on the near eastside is known as "little Iraq".
I didn't know that.
^^^^^^
CB: It's sort of local slang. Not quite as established as little Italy in
NYC. I was just up there taking my son to get a brace for his knee that he
twisted. I was thinking about it as I road down 7 Mile. I saw a Chaldean
Center and I was wondering if it was the one Saddam donated money too. I
guess it was a church.
^^^^^
I was in Windsor on Sunday, for the first time in my
life. It's a charming place. I went to the river, the street is
Riverfront or something like that. I was headed to Amherstburg. I really
wanted to use the bridge near Olde Sandwich Towne and go see Detroit.
But I have to admit I didn't want to cross the border. I simply don't
trust your customs or ours.
^^^^^^
CB: Yea, I'm paranoid about them too since 9/11 - ours mainly.
^^^^^
>( Don't tell Tommy Franks)
grin. I won't.
Ken.
