anti-war interaction

I was going through the checkout counter
when the cashier looked down at the peace button on my jacket.
She looked up at my face, and said: "I couldn't help but notice
your peace pin..."
I thought: Here we go.
",,,and I can't help wondering
why we have to have a President
who doesn't know the meaning of diplomacy?
I don't think he even knows how to spell the word.
--oh! I'm sorry if you voted for him..."
"No, don't worry."
"Oh, good. He's such an moron."
I felt like asking her if she was Canadian,
but her accent audibly declared she was not.
"Do many folks come through here against the war?"
"Oh, yes, but most wear pins that say "NO WAR" or something like that."
"I thought I was in the minority."
"Oh, no, I don't think so."
I was picking up my bags: "Well, thanks for speaking out."
"Thanks to you, too."
She was a middle-aged woman, working class, wedding ring, working hands,
thick around the waist, but not fat.
She gave me a smile.
It was the "we're right, be strong" smile.

We are approaching a threshold.
Now we must make the connections.
And show the next step.
