RE: Jim Craven and academic freedom

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the note. The only reason why I did not provide a summary is that
I didn't want to direct or spin conclusions from the given body of evidence;
I hope that those who can see what is going on (e.g. a former employee in
personnel, Emma, extremely conversant in employment law and protocols, who
has been an HR director and once spoke against me and feared me--as she and
others had/have been indoctrinated--refused to do illegal acts and then
suffered herself and became a close friend) will form their own conclusions
and then express them--always two or more sides to a story eh?

A) Emma sends her missive and asks that I forward it to the master list
(nothing unusual as many have done the same for friends and family not on
the list);
B) Dean tells me that there will be a reprimand merely for forwarding it;
C) Called into a meeting about Emma's letter, they cannot question the truth
of anything she has written, nor my right/duty as a State employee to pass
it along with a request for action on items mentioned;
D) Emma and I go to Board of Trustees to explain some of the issues and talk
about the concepts of willful blindness and depraved indifference along with
conspiracy; we are shut up in violation of the Public meetings act;
E) Previous interactions with two people on the internet (one an
ultra-rightist ROTC part-time adjunct and another person) not even mentioned
in the meeting then used against me. I had already complained about the ROTC
major, who, in response to his assertion that I had much to apologize for, I
had asked specifically what, to which he accused me of having disseminated
pornography on the master list (a felony). When I asked him for specific
dates, examples, times etc no response; I filed charges against him, saying
publicly that since he had accused me of a felony, and refused to give
specifics, "I wonder about his fitness to teach here or anywhere." This
statement is used against me, and this is the good part, when I asked for
the complete document they had used, they say that I must have it (they
don't need to give me the materials they used in their decision) and
further, they will investigate my complaint, examining the totality of words
and interactions, or in other words, they will use the materials they refuse
to give me, in addition to what I am supposed to come up with ( the
materials they used against me) to consider my charges in response to his
charges never brought up at the meeting to which I was given no chance to
even respond--I was simply summarily found guilty with the threat of being
fired next time.
F) Emma's letter dropped in terms of charges against me; Dean says they will
find something.
G) Union takes on due process and other issues--Duh--and new charges are
then added this time from a Multicultural director, who I have had no
contact with for over three weeks, the president is seen in her office right
before her filing of charges, right after union says they will take on new
charges, and as noted in the letter from Sue Karsch, she had been bad
mouthing me--and I had reported it--to students for some time.

That's about it so far, there is more but it is difficult to write it all.

Hope that helps,

Jim

Letters to dbeyer@xxxxxxxxx; Governor Gary Locke through Washington
government website.

Thanks to all,

Jim

Jim:

I read your post and think I have the gist of what's going on...
basically, you speak your mind so they say your are mentally unbalanced and
perhaps a dangerous person to have employed at the college, or something to
that effect? Clark kinda sounds like the Psych Ward in One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest.

You asked us to make our voices heard, to express our displeasure and to
distribute your request for assistance widely. May we ask you if you might
edit your post so that you more clearly stated the problem, presented the
internal politics in a way intellegible to outsiders, and gave us clear
instructions for action (like e-mail adresses and all)?

I just wanted to make these suggestions as you may then get more mileage

out of your request for help.

In solidarity with your Red Red politics,

Chris Carrico
