Iraq: What should have been done?

Surely, everyone on this list thinks that the sanctions on Iraq should
have been lifted long ago - or rather never imposed in the first
place -, thus abating the ordeal of the people. But what would have
happened then? What would the strengthened Iraqis have done to get rid
of Saddam Hussein? (Is there a consenus in the Western left if the
latter's disposition is even desirable?) Would there have been a chance
for a peaceful solution or would a protracted civil war with many
casulties have been the inevitable result? And how would Marxists have
reacted, considering that they give primacy to self-determination? Of
course these are just hypothetical questions, as current events are
unfolding in a completely different way. Nevertheless, as a (maybe
naive) pacifist I find some of the possible answers quite unsettling.
