re:Ruling tensions etc was Re: Behind Turkey's opposition to war
What is significant in the ME is the massive opposition demonstration in
Yemen, though unfortunately that country is too far from the real power
centers in the Arab world. What is pitiful, and is the subject of much
discussion among the local intellectuals, is the failure of Egypt to
have any meaningful demonstration on February 15th or otherwise.
Apparently partly lack of civil society, lack of political mobilization,
and the damned police state out in force and arresting leaders
beforehand are all factors.
Ultimately I think the precursor to total revolution in the Arab world
is mass revolt against these fossilized regimes in at least one major
country. Cynically, the neoconservatives on the surface are committed to
the same thing, 'Democratic Revolution' in the Islamic world, but I get
the feeling that is a different sort of 'liberation' altogether.
