Actually I *think* the concept belongs mostly to Goebbels. After
Stalingrad Hitler, it seems, never appeared in public again. Goebbels
however moved centre stage in terms of public rhetoric at least and I have
seen footage of his 'total war' speech. It was an incredible performance
in the way that happens when the aesthetic totally loses touch with the
ethical.
