Anti-Americanism (was re: Hardt in Guardian)

Lou asks:
"What is the evidence of this anti-Americanism?"

Well, some choice bits from the Berlin protest were:

"My dad fought the Amis in WWII"

"Throw the U.S. out of NATO"

And my personal favorite, if only because absurdly innocuous in comparison, the
cranky old fellow distributing little typewritten slips of paper reading "Amis
go home."

Then there was the crank on Alexanderplatz before the march with a German flag
(kind of a taboo 'round these parts).

I cannot possibly stress enough (broken record mode) how much the issue of
German war-guilt has fucked the Palestine solidarity movement. If uncritical
tail-ending of Red-Green continues within the anti-war movement, it leaves
another opening to the assorted autonomists shouting "nie wieder Deutschland"
and "Solidarity with Israel."

All this combined with the ex-Maoist-turned-ATTAC regular Peter Strottman
decrying the "Global lordship of the dollar" (oh, those poor opressed West
German workers!), and I might start wondering if national chauvinism is some
sort of congenital trait of the German "left." (Goldhagen, here I come...)

Alex

P.S. I need no reminders about how the broad nature of a movement necessitates
a plurality of viewpoints, but self-described revolutionaries have the task of
combatting this sort of nonsense, not opportunistically tailing it because they
sniff the opportunity of a paper-sale.
