San Francisco: Brief initial report
As most of you know, our demo here was put off one day (yes, because we're
'different')...due to the Chinese New Years day parade which was scheduled
for yesterday.
Jeff Mackler of Socialist Action and a co-chair of today's event told me he
believed the march today was "as big as the last one" in January. I think it
was smaller, about 2/3' the size of the last one, which was 150 to 200
thousand.
Basically the same cast of participants but with the noticeable inclusion of
a truly organized ... Organized labor intervention with between 1,000 and
2,000 participating and tons of union banners, even from the usually more
conservative Building Trades (Operating Engineers, Roofers, IBEW, etc). It
was a brisk 65 degrees (Eat your heart out New York!) but not cold enough to
dissuade anyone from coming, even though we had a large rainstorm in the
evening.
