Benn-Hussein Interview

I managed to catch most all the interview last night. I think it was quite a
historic sight. I've never seen anything like it before - Hussein got 25
minutes of primetime in a constructive and open questioning to argue his
side. I think Tony Benn played the situation well getting the channels to
compete although I could well imagine many decrying his interviewing style -
yet it was like viewing an interview from another planet - he let Saddam
speak for himself, all the time strengthening antiwar arguments. It was a
powerful piece of antiwar propaganda - I don't know the effect it will have
on British people but it certainly was a breath of fresh air when compared
to the usual spin we are used to from 'mainstream' politicians.

Tony Benn was then subjected to a tough interview by the Channel 4
presenter, although it largely bounced off him. After the show web-surfers

I note in passing that Tony Benn has taken the line of not signing the
Mirror petition as he doesn't agree with war even with UN backing. He has
done well to steer the argument against war per se as opposed to more
legalistic (UN) approaches.
