PUERTO RICO AND THE PHILIPPINES:
Two Fronts, One Struggle!

Wednesday, January 22, 6:30 PM

Sponsored by the Vieques Support Campaign, Network in
Solidarity with the People of the Philippines, and New Yorkers
Say No to War.

This program will feature reports on the state of the
anti-war, anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles in
Puerto Rico and the Philippines: two countries that share a
common legacy of U.S. colonial domination. 100+ years of
oppression has also bred fierce popular resistance to U.S.
imperialism. Learn more about these inspiring movements and
how we can link arms more powerfully against the U.S. empire
and its war machine--from Iraq to Vieques, from Palestine to
the Philippines.

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER
from the Philippines:

Marie Hilao-Enriquez

Secretary-General of KARAPATAN, the leading national human
rights alliance in the Philippines.

Since Gloria Arroyo took power in 2001, there have been 167
assassinations by the U.S.-trained Philippine Army and
paramilitaries, and over 38,000 victims of human rights
abuses. Ms. Hilao-Enriquez will discuss the deteriorating
state of human rights in the Philippines, the effects of U.S.
military intervention in the wake of 9-11, and the status of
peace talks between the government and the principal insurgent
groups.

She will also speak about the nationwide work of KARAPATAN
and other sectoral organizations grouped in BAYAN ( New
Patriotic Alliance). These groups of workers, peasants, women,
students, Muslims, indigenous people, gays and lesbians, and
people of faith have a mass base numbering in the millions in
the cities and countryside.
