The UN and the War on Iraq

The latest polls here show according to the ABC news "a hardening of public
opinion against Australia's involvement in the war".

"The AC Neilson Poll shows 62 per cent of respondents support a war with
Iraq only if approved by the UN. Thirty per cent of those surveyed say
Australia should not go to war with Iraq under any circumstances... In
Australia the opposition to war is most prevalent among supporters
of Labor and the left wing voters, and among women. Women
are more strongly opposed to conflict, according to the
survey, which found 34 per cent of women opposed compared to 27 per cent of
men." (www.abc.net.au)

The idiot leader of the Labor Party, Simon Crean, claims this is a
justification of his party's stance. It is pleasing of course that so many
people are not as gung ho for war as is the Prime Minister. But what
worries me is that the peace movement seems to have settled for a
particularly worrying lowest common denominator - "all the way with the
UN". The problem with putting one's faith in the UN is that of course the
USA can bribe and bully the UN into supporting its dirty war.

I have no faith in the weapons inspectors either - especially not after
their discovery of the chemical warheads. Quite clearly some of them want
to be the boys scouts for the USA and come up with the "smoking gun".

We need to get across the message that UN or no UN approval this is an
unjust war. We are not for a "diplomatic solution" either as the Labor
Party here is demanding. We are for peace -just that.

regards

Gary
