Chavez takes step toward siezing food stocks and production
AFP. 10 January 2003. Chavez orders military to plan seizure of idled
food industry.
CARACAS -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday he ordered the
military to prepare to seize food stocks and production plants idled by
a 40-day-old strike.
"They must prepare plans to take military control of the food factories
and stocks," Chavez told supporters in San Carlos, 200 kilometers (125
miles) southwest of Caracas.
"I am prepared to take any action that has to be taken to guarantee food
distribution," the president said.
He accused the strike organizers of "seeking to murder the Venezuelan
people through hunger."
