In the way of an apology
I just returned from a week in Istanbul (am putting together a lengthy post
with impressions on the trip, supplemented in my typically dilettantish
fashion with analysis of Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" and Jules
Dassin's "Topkapi"), where I only had the chance to check the archives once
but not even enough time to read the messages carefully. When I saw that a
bunch of them dealt with Stalin, I overreacted and wrote Walter Lippmann to
communicate my displeasure. Now that I am going through them slowly and
carefully, I want to apologize for threatening the participants. Instead I
want to offer them my heart-felt congratulations for a really thoughtful
and civil exchange. Of course, I haven't read them all yet, so if they turn
into a flame war, all bets are off. ;-)
