I also meant to ask: did anyone out there who
also has seen the film read the Butcher character
(played by Daniel Day-Lewis) as possibly of
Scots-Irish or Ulster Scottish descent? The
surname--Cunning--doesn't exclude the
possibility. Certainly the traditions of the
'nativist' gang as shown in the film makes me
think of the gang images the Ulsterman project
even today. Some of the discussion that the Irish
Catholic gang members have would have you think
this is really just an American version of the
struggles going on in Ireland, and the Irish
Americans divided up or were divided along the
lines that split them up back in Ireland.
